Center of Excellence

Our Fall Prevention Center of Excellence is the only facility of its kind in the area.  We find that our diabetic and mature adult patients may have trouble walking without falling.  If a diabetic patient has had an amputation or has morbid obesity they may be at risk for falling.  As you are well aware, mature adult patients can fall and break a hip as their proprioception decreases, postural sway increases and muscle strength decreases as aging occurs.  The number one cause of traumatic death for mature adults is falling.   As lower extremity specialists, we are uniquely positioned to intervene and prevent these traumatic events from occurring.   We utilize a fall risk assessment tool, for our at risk patients, to determine the severity of pathology that is placing them in harm’s way.  We then utilize a comprehensive approach in treating their pathology such as muscle strengthening through physical therapy, referral to neurology or primary care for systemic management, shoe modification, orthotics and ankle foot orthotics.   We utilize, when necessary, a fall prevention brace to address specific conditions such as ankle weakness or sprains.  Due to the severity of some problems, the use of a quad cane or wheeled walker is required.  We provide this equipment as all of our locations are durable medical equipment providers which  allows us to provide all the equipment that our patients need under one roof.
